Triptorelin is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Triptorelin works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This effect helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. This medication is similar to a natural substance made by the body (luteinizing hormone releasing hormone-LHRH). Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.
How triptorelin works?
Triptorelin is a type of hormone therapy drug called a gonadotropin releasing hormone blocker. It lowers the level of testosterone in men and oestrogen in women. It does this by stopping the release of luteinising hormone from the pituitary gland. In men, this stops the testicles producing the male sex hormone, testosterone. In women, it stops the ovaries from producing oestrogen.
Prostate cancer depends on testosterone, to grow. Hormone therapies that lower the level of testosterone can slow down the growth of cancer or shrink it.
Some breast cancers depend on oestrogen to grow. Lowering the level of oestrogen can slow or stop the growth of the cancer.
When triptorelin is given:
Triptorelin can be used on its own or with other types of treatment. It may be used before or after surgery or radiotherapy. It may also be used to control prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (advanced or metastatic prostate cancer).
Triptorelin can be given for months or years, depending on your situation. Some men with advanced prostate cancer may have intermittent therapy with triptorelin. This involves having triptorelin treatment for a few months until the cancer is at a very low level (measured by a blood test called a PSA test). You then have a break from treatment and restart triptorelin when its needed.
How should this medicine be used?
Triptorelin injection comes as a powder to be mixed with sterile water and injected into the muscle of either buttock by a doctor or nurse in a medical office or clinic. An injection of 3.75 mg of triptorelin is usually given every 4 weeks. An injection of 11.25 mg of triptorelin is usually given every 12 weeks. An injection of 22.5 mg of triptorelin is usually given every 24 weeks.
Triptorelin may cause an increase in certain hormones in the first few weeks after injection. Your doctor will monitor you carefully for any new or worsening symptoms during this time.
