Ropivacaine is a local anaesthetic drug belonging to the amino amide group. The name ropivacaine refers to both the racemate and the marketed S-enantiomer. Ropivacaine is an anesthetic (numbing medicine) that blocks the nerve impulses that send pain signals to your brain.
Ropivacaine is used as a local (in only one area) anesthesia for a spinal block, also called an epidural. The medication is used to provide anesthesia during a surgery or C-section, or to ease labor pains.
 
Ropivacaine Hydrochloride is often used in combination therapy for epidural analgesia, such as labor in pregnant women. Ropivacaine Hydrochloride for local anesthesia, including adult and infants with children over 12 years of age, nerve block, epidural and intrathecal anesthesia. Effect:
 
Ropivacaine blocks the initiation and conduction of nerve impulses by decreasing neuronal membrane permeability to sodium ions. This reversibly stabilizes the membrane and inhibits depolarization, resulting in the failure of propagated action potentials and subsequent conduction blockade. The conduction blockade results in sensory and motor blockade. There is less motor blockade with ropivacaine as compared with bupivacaine.
 
 
Other actions/effects:
 
Ropivacaine may cause central nervous system (CNS) stimulation or depression, and cardiac depression. These effects are usually dose-related, and result from administration of large doses or unintentional intravascular injection of ropivacaine.
 
In in vitro and animal tests, ropivacaine caused more cardiac depression than lidocaine, but less than bupivacaine.
